Oberlin School District Board of Education

Term: 3 years

Question:What can be done to keep our children enrolled in the Oberlin Public Schools?

VOTE FOR TWO

Marci Alegant

Response to Question: We need to do three basic things to keep our children enrolled in the Oberlin schools: provide our students with an excellent education; foster respect and tolerance among students, faculty, parents and administrators; and achieve (and perhaps even expect) academic excellence. This is what we’re doing to achieve these goals: First, our district curriculum director has recently completed a comprehensive year-long review, and we are working hard to increase rigor and continuity between and among grade levels. This process should help us raise our state report card standings. The International Baccalaureate Program is a remarkable opportunity for academic success, intellectual rigor, multi-culturalism, and community service for students K-12. We are also making significant strides in discipline in all schools in the district. I would add that we are now retaining more students in our schools than ever before, and so I am very optimistic that we will succeed—and soon.

Carol L. Correthers

Response to Question: We need to remember that our main focus in not the state mandated tests, but rather to educate each and every child. We need to prepare our students to meet the challenges that they will face once they leave Oberlin City Schools.  We need to continue to offer a variety of learning opportunities for all students. We need to continue to bring innovative and progressive academic programs to Oberlin City Schools.

  1. International Baccalaureate program that will be offered from Kindergarten to High School.
  2. The Elementary Spanish program (SITES),
  3. Candle of Knowledge poetry program at the middle school
  4. Pre-Kindergarten Excellence program.

We need to continue to inform the community about the great progress that Oberlin City School’s students are making: the highest SAT scores in the county, with the most students taking the SAT, and increased open enrollment.

Paula Jones

Response to Question: This school year has seen some record breaking enrollment in recent history.  I believe Oberlin City Schools are heading in the right direction with bringing in the International Baccalaureate program to all our students.  I believe rigorous and relative curriculum will help students want to stay in Oberlin and stay in school.  I believe the administration has heard what many parents have been asking for and they are attempting to deliver.  I believe the key at this point is the backing of the community which will show the students we have faith in them and in our teachers.

Response to Question: One of the most important things we need to do is to improve the  communication between the board and the community. Alot of damage and a division was created when the mascot was changed. The trust was lost and the communication has been dimished. It is my perception that some feel we no longer have any voice in the decisions that are made and these decisions affect the entire community. Let us try and encourage more parental involvement in the various committee's for example PTO, Boosters, etc. I would like to see a public relations committee formed. Comprised of students, board members, and community members where we can come up with innovated ways to bridge the gap that has been created so we can all focus on the education of our children and keeping them enrolled in the Oberlin School System.
